About the Project

SquidFit is a fitness app seamlessly integrated with a smart shirt. Providing real-time feedback, personalized guidance, and a strong emphasis on injury prevention and motivation, SquidFit empowers users to optimize their performance and successfully achieve their fitness goals.

The Problem

Fitness apps lack personalized guidance, seamless integration, real-time feedback, and motivation.

The Consequences

01

Decreased user engagement

Without personalized guidance, real-time feedback, and motivation, users may become disinterested or frustrated, leading to decreased engagement and usage.

02

Increased risk of injury

Insufficient focus on injury prevention can lead users to risky exercises, causing harm and hindering their fitness progress.

03

Fitness Goal Ineffectiveness

If users do not receive personalized guidance and motivation, they may struggle to make progress towards their fitness goals, resulting in dissatisfaction and a lack of success.

The Solution

Simple. Reliable. Motivating.

Crafting an application to aid exercisers in tracking and monitoring their fitness progress seamlessly integrates with wearable devices. It employs advanced EMG technology to analyze muscle activity during workouts. The app boasts an intuitive interface, ensuring efficient navigation and a user-friendly experience.

User Research

Gathering insights about exercisers and fitness app users

Incorporating user feedback is crucial in my design process, ensuring alignment with preferences and needs. I surveyed 50 users via Facebook and Google Forms, gathering insights on fitness app usage and preferences. These guided my approach, resulting in a more intuitive interface. This highlighted the urgent need for an app that analyzes muscle activity.

Tell me what is the main difficulty you experience in training?

Nelly, UX Designer

I often struggle with consistency and motivation in my workouts. Sometimes, I find it hard to stick to my routine, resulting in giving up mid-workout or skipping altogether.

Maya, 29, interviewee #1

Have you ever thought of hiring a personal trainer?

Nelly, UX Designer

Financially, I can’t afford a fitness trainer right now. My priority is financing my son’s kindergarten. While I recognize the benefits, it’s not feasible for me at the moment.

Maya, 29, interviewee #1

What features would you like in a fitness app to meet your needs?

Nelly, UX Designer

I need a fitness app that guides me through exercises, keeps me safe from injuries, and helps me reach my fitness goals. I’ve been injured before due to pushing myself too hard.

Daniel, 36, interviewee #2

Market Research

By now, there is no app that can completely replace the fitness trainers

As part of the market research, I analyzed competitors and market trends in the field of fitness apps, examining app features, interfaces, and user experience. While there are countless fitness and healthy lifestyle apps on the market, I decided to focus on four apps that seemed popular today and most relevant to my research.

Main Conclusions

01

Too generic or overpersonalization

Many apps have not found a balance between using overpersonalization to enhance user engagement, and being too generic in attempt to solve the same problem for a large number of people in the same way.

02

Jack of trades, master of none

Focusing on the breadth rather than the depth of features, and attempting to cover too many aspects in an effort to address the same problem for a large audience in the same way, may result in a lack of depth or expertise in any particular aspect.

03

Needle in a haystack

Dealing with a huge amount of data and features, and the lack of prioritization of the application’s goals. which could lead to a decrease in user satisfaction.

04

Little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Inadequate user experience resulting from poor design resulting from a poor understanding of users’ needs.

Affinity Mapping

Utilizing a visual tool to interpret and organize data effectively

Through synthesizing data gathered from surveys and interviews, I employed affinity mapping to cluster analogous responses and keywords. This method enables me to identify trends and outliers, empowering me to prioritize the diverse needs of the users effectively.

User Persona

I formed 2 main user personas based on the pre-design user research

To better understand users and tailor solutions, I’ve crafted two user personas based on research findings. They help empathize with user challenges and keep design efforts user-centric, ensuring solutions meet authentic needs effectively.

Persona #1

Ariel, 29

Ariel is a psychology master’s student, stays committed to fitness with Pilates, TRX, and weekly strength training. Despite occasional low energy and financial constraints preventing personal training, she finds motivation when exercising with friends, though scheduling is challenging.

Pain Points

Goals

Persona #2

Ben, 36

Ben is a programmer and former sports enthusiast who suffered a severe shoulder injury, reducing his training frequency. Although he can afford a fitness trainer, Ben struggles with committing to regular schedules but is determined to regain his fitness.

User Stories

who the user is, what he wants, and why

A user story serves as a brief and informal narrative, crafted from the viewpoint of a user or customer, to steer design decisions. Its purpose is to illuminate contexts, motivations, and desired outcomes. Using the personas of Ariel and Ben, I’ve created user stories to address the main problems effectively.

As a busy woman I want to receive motivation and personalized guidance in order to achieve my fitness goals.

As someone previously injured due to improper training, I aim to learn correct techniques to prevent re-injury and reach my goals.

Pain Points

01

Tracking precision issue

The users often face difficulty in accurately tracking and monitoring muscle activity during workouts and progress effectively.

02

Lack of motivation

The users frequently struggle with a lack of motivation to exercise consistently. This can be caused by various factors, such as busy schedules, fatigue, or a lack of interest in physical activities.

03

Financial limitations

The cost of personal training sessions can be a barrier for users on a tight budget or those with other financial priorities.

04

Injury concerns

The users often have concerns about getting injured during workouts. These concerns stem from the desire to stay safe and prevent any potential harm or accidents while engaging in physical activity.

The solution

From problem to solution

After thorough research, the solution involves developing a new app. Integrated with wearable devices and EMG technology, it tracks muscle activity during workouts, addressing multiple issues.

Implementing the solutions within my design

Real-time Monitoring

Utilizes advanced EMG technology to monitor muscle activity and contractions in real-time, enhancing workout effectiveness and safety.

Virtual Coaching & Injury Prevention

Offers personalized support akin to traditional trainers, providing tailored plans and real-time insights to prevent injuries from muscle fatigue during workout.

Automatic Progress Tracking

Users can engage in their workouts while the app seamlessly records and monitors their fitness progress over time, eliminating the need for manual tracking.

In-App Rewards System

Allows users to earn points and redeem them for rewards, including purchasing wearable devices directly within the app.

Personalized Recommendations

Offers tailored recommendations to optimize training effectiveness based on individual user data and goals.

Wireframes

Sketching the solution and bringing it to life

After finishing the information architecture, I started designing with simple sketches in my notebook. These ideas turned into digital wireframes using Figma, creating a more detailed prototype for testing.

Final Design

Dark is the new bright

The final step was designing the user interfaces for both the web and mobile apps. My goal was to create a sleek design with dark tones and red accents, ensuring an engaging and focused user experience.

Seamless welcome experience

I’ve designed a seamless and concise onboarding experience to introduce users to our innovative concept. Each screen provides a clear explanation of every aspect.
